Pililla’s Gentle Giants: Windmills Near Manila
See giant windmills near Manila! Escape the city and explore the Pililla Wind Farm in Rizal. These “gentle giants” turn wind into clean power, and they create stunning views while they are at it. Come for the nature, stay to relax, and discover the future of clean energy up close.
Living in Manila can wear anyone down. The noise, the crowds, the daily rush — sometimes you just need fresh air and a little peace and quiet. It was my birthday, and one of my friends suggested a trip to the Pililla Wind Farm. The town is delightful to look at, and its giant windmills make it even more interesting.
Pililla is famous for its sweet, juicy pineapples. The town also has a rich history, with old churches and traditions that go back centuries. You might not think of windmills when you think of Pililla, yet this town is a great alternative to the faraway wind farms of Ilocos Norte. Here, the windmills stand tall and graceful on green hills above tranquil Laguna de Bay.
The Pililla Wind Farm sits in Barangay Halayhayin, Pililla, Rizal. Its 27 turbines generate about 150 GWh of clean energy a year, and the site lies in a natural wind corridor where winds can reach 36 km/h. It is a significant supplement to the power supply of Metro Manila and Rizal.
The farm is newer than many people think. Construction began in 2013, and Alternergy Wind One Corporation brought the 54 MW Pililla Wind Farm into operation in 2015. Its 27 turbines stand in three clusters, each about 125 metres tall, and together they supply electricity to roughly 66,000 households.
Escape the City and Meet the Gentle Giants
The noisy streets of Manila disappear as soon as you leave the city. Traffic and loud horns give way to rustling leaves and rolling hills. Fresh air fills your lungs, and the beautiful sights of the countryside surround you.
It feels like a calming melody of leaves rustling in the wind instead of the constant honking of a busy city. A relaxing vibe takes over, and it carries you toward those towering windmills ahead.
Unlike the giant wind farms far up north in Ilocos Norte, the Pililla Wind Farm is much closer and easier to reach. This hidden gem sits just a short drive away, so it is perfect for a quick escape from the city’s craziness. You can breathe in fresh air, enjoy beautiful scenery, and see the awesome windmills — all without travelling for hours.

The Importance of the Pililla Wind Farm
The Pililla Wind Farm is a relatively new addition to the landscape. Construction began in 2013, and the farm started operating in 2015. Alternergy chose Pililla for its strong, consistent wind resources.
The windmills stand tall not just as impressive structures, but as symbols of hope for a greener, more sustainable future.
Clean Energy Champions
Fossil fuels come with a heavy environmental cost: air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and resources that will one day run out. Wind power offers a cleaner way forward. Here are its key benefits:
- Reduces greenhouse gas emissions: Unlike fossil fuels, wind turbines don’t burn anything, so they generate electricity without releasing carbon dioxide.
- Minimises air and water pollution: Wind power avoids the pollution that comes with extracting and burning fossil fuels.
- Conserves precious resources: Wind is renewable and readily available, so it preserves finite resources for the future.
- Powers Pililla’s future: The farm provides a reliable source of clean energy, cuts reliance on fossil fuels, and supports sustainable development in the town.
As the Municipality of Pililla notes in its profile of the 54 MW wind farm, the project is a point of local pride as well as a power source.
Up Close and Personal (-ish)
For safety reasons, you can’t walk right up to the base of the windmills. Even so, you can get close enough to appreciate their size and power, and to feel just how tall 125 metres really is.
Picnics and Photo Ops: Fun Things to Do at the Wind Farm
The windmills are definitely the main attraction, but there is more to enjoy. The peaceful feeling and picturesque scenery around the Pililla Wind Farm make it a lovely spot for a picnic with family or friends. A leisurely stroll gives you fresh air and mountain views at every turn.
For people who love taking pictures, the windmills are a one-of-a-kind backdrop. Turbines against green hills and wide skies make every shot special, from a quick selfie to a full landscape. Make a day of it in Rizal: campers can stay overnight at Apiary Mountain Camp in Tanay, and anyone who wants a swim on the way home can stop at Bosay Resort in Antipolo.

Author’s Note
Our friendship isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. We get on each other’s nerves sometimes, hit the mute button on social media for a bit, and maybe even struggle to find the right words when we mess up. But at the end of the day, we own up to our mistakes and forgive each other, even for the silly stuff.
The most important thing is that we keep trying to talk things out, even when it’s awkward. We don’t hold grudges or keep bringing up old arguments.
We’ve learned the art of apology — a real, heartfelt “mea culpa” that clears the air and allows us to write a new chapter in our friendship. We don’t dwell on the past; instead, we focus on the fun stuff we have coming up together.
And even when the going gets tough, our friendship endures. It’s a safe haven, a place of acceptance, and ultimately, a love that forgives all.
Thank you for today, Ed and Jee! Love you 🩷
