Books, Booths, and 8,000 Steps: A Day at the Manila International Book Fair 2024

Join us as we explore the 2024 Manila International Book Fair, filled with literary treasures, vibrant booths, and 8,000 steps of adventure!

The schedule of special events at MIBF 2024

On Sunday, September 15, 2024 — the fair’s final day — we headed to the Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) after a fascinating morning at the Space & Time Cube Museum. The fair ran from September 11 to 15, 2024, at the SMX Convention Center Manila in Pasay. It is the Philippines’ longest-running and largest book fair.

As an avid reader, I could not pass this up. The museum had been exciting, but the thought of rows and rows of books gave me a fresh burst of energy.

First Impressions of the Manila International Book Fair: A Haven for Book Lovers

Stepping inside felt like walking into a book lover’s dream. Booth after booth filled the hall, offering everything from popular titles to hard-to-find gems.

What made it special was the variety. Alongside mainstream favorites, local authors and small publishers shared unique titles I would not see anywhere else. Whether you love fiction, self-help, history, or manga, something here will catch your eye — a favorite author, or a new voice waiting to be discovered.

Diversity of Publishers and Exhibitors

One of the best parts was the range of exhibitors. Big names like Fully Booked, National Book Store, and Vibal Publishing filled large booths with new releases and timeless classics.

Fully Booked stood out for its discounts and its mix of fantasy, contemporary fiction, and self-help. Still, I kept drifting toward the independent publishers and authors. Their booths were a chance for smaller, local voices to shine, and I found books there that big stores simply do not carry.

Interactive Booths and Activities

The fair was about far more than buying books. National Book Store, for example, hosted author signings and mini-workshops throughout the day.

Those moments were the most enriching part for me. Meeting authors, asking questions, and hearing about their writing journeys was both inspiring and motivating. Younger visitors were not left out, either: games, quizzes, and reading corners invited kids to sit down and explore children’s books. The effort behind those spaces made the event feel welcoming for all ages.

A Feast for Collectors and Stationery Enthusiasts

Beyond the books, MIBF 2024 was a haven for stationery lovers. Booth after booth offered journals, pens, bookmarks, and other little treasures every bookworm appreciates.

It was hard to resist. I picked up a few pretty journals and pens, perfect for notes during my next reading sessions. If you love pairing reading with creative journaling, this fair will not disappoint.

Crowd and Venue Experience

Given its popularity, the venue was predictably packed. Even so, the event was well managed, and staff and volunteers kept foot traffic moving smoothly.

The booth layout helped, too. Even in the crowd, I could always find a little breathing room. My only small complaint? The air conditioning could have been stronger with so many people inside.

Still, the energy made up for it. Being surrounded by fellow book lovers, all just as excited, kept the whole experience lively.

Pricing and Discounts: A Reader’s Paradise

The discounts are one of MIBF’s biggest draws, and they did not disappoint. Some titles were up to 50% off, and bundle offers made bulk buying hard to resist.

Not every booth slashed prices, though. Rare and specialized books stayed at their usual prices. Even so, for the variety and the thrill of discovery, the day was worth every penny.

Coffee, Comfort Food, and Classics: Snacks While You Browse

I was pleasantly surprised by the snack booths inside the fair. Browsing is joyful work, but it is tiring, so a good food break mattered.

Ellipsis Coffee kept readers going with a good range of caffeinated drinks. Gloria’s Goto served comforting bowls of rice porridge for anyone craving something savory.

And who could forget the iconic Tender Juicy Hotdogs stand? Its quick snacks carried a touch of nostalgia. These little pauses let us sit, rest, and recharge before heading back to the books.

Post-Event Thoughts

Looking back, the 2024 Manila International Book Fair exceeded my expectations. The crowds may not suit everyone, but the benefits far outweighed that small inconvenience. The books, the activities, and the buzz of fellow readers made it truly memorable.

A few tips if you go next time: arrive early, and consider public transportation, because parking at the SMX Convention Center can be challenging when several events run at once. For future dates and schedules, check the official MIBF website.

Make a Manila day of it, like we did. Start with museum-hopping in Manila, wander historic Intramuros, Manila’s walled city, then end the day among the books. And if you are visiting from out of town, our guide to where to stay in the Philippines can help you choose a comfortable base.

Then there were the steps. Between the museum in the morning and the fair after lunch, we had already spent hours on our feet — and the fair’s sheer size kept us moving from booth to booth. By the end of the day, we had racked up an impressive 8,000 steps. Tired feet, happy heart.

Rating the Experience: 4.5/5

One of the most striking displays at the fair was a large tree installation with a trunk entirely filled with books.

Overall, I rate my experience at the Manila International Book Fair 4.5 out of 5. It is a must-visit for bookworms, with an unmatched selection of books and bookish finds.

The minor setbacks — the crowds and a few logistical hiccups — did not take away from the joy of the day. MIBF 2024 was a celebration of stories, creativity, and the pure pleasure of reading, and I am already looking forward to the next one.

Our book fair day was a highlight of September 2024, and the perfect follow-up to our museum morning. If you are a book lover like me, mark your calendar for the next MIBF. It is an experience you should not miss!

Author’s Note:

I love that I get to attend events like this now, and immerse myself in what I love. In the past, I did not have the same freedom to explore my interests or go to gatherings like book fairs. Now, I cherish every chance.

Choosing how I spend my time, and who I spend it with, feels liberating. It is more than the books. It is about living in line with my true interests, and sharing these moments with like-minded people.

Books have always comforted me. Seeing them lined up on bookstore shelves, or spread across fair booths, simply sparks happiness in me.

Each book feels like a new world waiting to be explored — a fresh perspective, a new philosophy. One that has always captivated me is Dream of the Red Chamber, with its rich characters and vivid portrait of Chinese society. I own a PDF copy, and I return to it often. Every reread reveals a detail I missed, or a deeper feeling for its characters.

I also deeply love Japanese philosophy — its simplicity, mindfulness, and harmony with nature. Books on Zen Buddhism, wabi-sabi, or ikigai can hold me for hours, and their quiet call to reflection feels essential in today’s fast-paced world.

Most of all, days like this remind me that browsing shelves and discovering new voices is more than a hobby for me. It is a way of life, centered on learning, growth, and intentional living.

One Last Tip for Book Lovers

If you are planning a trip to the Manila International Book Fair next year, go on a weekday morning if you can, and bring a sturdy tote. The Manila International Book Fair usually runs for five days every September at the SMX Convention Center Manila, and it is well worth clearing your schedule for. Trust me — the Manila International Book Fair is the kind of day that fills both your shelves and your step count.
