Why Taeyeon Songs Speak to a Broken Heart

Taeyeon — Kim Tae-yeon — is best known as the leader of Girls’ Generation, one of the most successful K-pop groups ever. She made her solo debut in October 2015 with the EP I, and its title track went straight to number one. Since then, My Voice (2017), Purpose (2019), and INVU (2022) have made her one of Korea’s most beloved solo voices. For her full story, Taeyeon’s Wikipedia page covers her career in detail. What I know is simpler: her voice tells the truth about heartbreak. And of all her records, the sad Taeyeon songs are the ones that found me when I needed them most.

Relationships are complicated, and so are their endings. Sometimes we hold on far too long, hoping for change or redemption. Sometimes we stay in situationships that blur every line we meant to draw. The ambiguity hurts. It leaves us unsure of our worth and reaching for closure that never quite comes.

Music helps us carry feelings that words cannot. Over time, these Taeyeon songs became my companions for every stage of grief. I even gathered them into a Korean breakup songs playlist, (Taeyeon’s Ballads), for the nights when I needed them on repeat.

If a different voice suits your hard days, try BIGBANG’s breakup songs — my soundtrack for healing a broken heart. And if you process grief through stories instead, read my review of Black Mirror’s “Be Right Back”. It is an episode about refusing to let go of someone you have lost, and it stayed with me for days.

Taeyeon Songs for Every Stage of Heartbreak

Here are the Taeyeon songs I leaned on most, in roughly the order I needed them. Press play, let yourself feel everything, and take it one song at a time.

Taeyeon (태연) – Stress (스트레스)

Not every breakup song is a ballad. “Stress,” from her 2015 debut EP I, is upbeat pop-rock — a shout-along release for the frustration heartbreak leaves behind. On my angriest days, singing this one loud in the car honestly did me more good than crying did. It is one of the Taeyeon songs that lets you shout the pain out.

Taeyeon (태연) – I Blame On You (아이 블레임 온 유)

Some nights, heartbreak turns into blame, and few Taeyeon songs capture that stage like “I Blame on You,” from My Voice. It points at the person who left, and at the love that failed. I do not live in this song anymore, but I needed it. Sometimes you have to feel the anger before you can set it down.

Taeyeon (태연) – Fine (파인)

If you play only one of these Taeyeon songs, make it “Fine,” the title track of My Voice (2017). Everyone asks if you are fine after a breakup. This song admits what we rarely say out loud: not yet, and not today. But maybe, slowly, someday. It never rushes the healing, and neither should we.

Taeyeon (태연) – To the Moon (투 더 문)

From her 2020 EP What Do I Call You, “To the Moon” is the song I played when everything felt hopeless. Taeyeon sings of escaping somewhere pain cannot follow — the moon, far beyond the reach of memories. It is still one of the Taeyeon songs I recommend first to friends who are going through it.

Taeyeon (태연) – What Do I Call You

The title track of her 2020 EP asks the question every breakup leaves behind. What do you call someone who used to be your person? Not a lover anymore, yet not quite a stranger. It is one of those Taeyeon songs that sounds light while it quietly breaks your heart.

Taeyeon (태연) – 11:11 (일레븐 일레븐)

A digital single from November 2016, “11:11” is named for the minute when you are supposed to make a wish. Taeyeon’s wish is a sad one: to forget someone as time passes. If you have ever caught the clock at 11:11 and wished for the wrong thing, this gentle ballad will find you. It remains one of my favorite late-night Taeyeon songs.

Taeyeon (태연) – Rain (비)

Of all the early Taeyeon songs, “Rain” may be the most atmospheric. It launched SM Station in February 2016 and went straight to number one in South Korea. Rain suits a fresh breakup perfectly: memories pour down whether you want them to or not. On rainy nights, it always made me feel understood.

Taeyeon (태연) – Time Spent Walking Through Memories (기억을 걷는 시간)

“Time Spent Walking Through Memories” is Taeyeon’s beloved cover of a song by the rock band Nell. It pictures walking back through your memories, one by one — a first love, a familiar voice, a touch you can almost feel. That image sums up this whole playlist. You do not erase the past; you walk through it.

Taeyeon (태연) – Time Lapse (타임 랩스)

Also from My Voice, “Time Lapse” captures how unevenly time moves after a loss. Days crawl, then suddenly a season is gone, while one person stays in sharp focus. Some Taeyeon songs cry with you; this one thinks with you. It explained a feeling I could never explain to anyone else.

Taeyeon (태연) – Four Seasons (사계)

Released as a single in March 2019, and later included on Purpose, “Four Seasons” compares love to the seasons. It bloomed, it burned bright, and then it turned cold. Its honesty hit home for me. Some love is not forever, and pretending otherwise only makes it hurt longer. Few Taeyeon songs say goodbye this gracefully.

Taeyeon (태연) – Blue (블루)

A B-side released alongside “Four Seasons” in 2019, “Blue” is heartbreak at its most hushed. Blue is the color of sadness here, and of missing someone who keeps drifting further away. Her soft, almost whispered delivery aches in the best way. It is one of the softest Taeyeon songs I know.

Taeyeon (태연) – Bye (바이)

Long before the solo albums, there was “Bye,” her 2013 theme song for the film Mr. Go. It is a tender farewell to someone about to leave, sung with real warmth rather than bitterness. For me, it marked a turning point. Goodbye stopped feeling like only an ending, and started feeling like a thank-you.

Taeyeon (태연) – Set Me Free (셋 미 프리)

From SM the Ballad’s album Breath (2014), “Set Me Free” pleads to be released from a love that hurts. There is a special kind of freedom in finally wanting to be let go. This song was waiting for me when I reached that turning point, and it has stayed with me ever since.

Taeyeon (태연) – Farewell (먼저 말해줘)

Also from I, “Farewell” captures the moment just before goodbye. You can feel the end coming, and you almost wish the other person would say it first. Its Korean title, 먼저 말해줘, even means “tell me first.” It is the sound of a door closing slowly.

Taeyeon (태연) – When I Was Young (웬 아이 워즈 영)

Another My Voice track, “When I Was Young” looks back at a younger, more innocent love — the kind you were sure would last forever. Listening felt like opening an old photo album: sweet, a little painful, impossible to regret completely. It is one of the gentlest Taeyeon songs about first love.

Taeyeon (태연) – Love in Color (러브 인 컬러)

On My Voice, “Love in Color” remembers a love that once painted life in bright colors. Then it asks what the world looks like as that color fades to gray. The song is nostalgic without ever turning bitter. It might be the prettiest of the sad Taeyeon songs on this list.

Taeyeon (태연) – Lonely Night (론리 나이트)

The title says everything. “Lonely Night,” from My Voice, is for the small hours — when the house is quiet, sleep will not come, and missing someone feels louder than in daylight. Taeyeon’s soft, close delivery made those nights feel a little less lonely. It is Taeyeon songs like this that make 3 a.m. bearable.

Taeyeon (태연) – Curtain Call (커튼 콜)

A curtain call is an ending that earns one last round of applause. This My Voice track treats a finished relationship like the close of a play: the story is over, so take a bow and leave the stage. Few Taeyeon songs let you practice saying goodbye with this much grace.

Taeyeon (태연) – Eraser (지우개)

An eraser cannot undo a love story, much as we might wish it could. This My Voice song is about wanting to erase someone from your memory — then discovering some marks do not rub out so easily. Anyone in the “delete every photo” stage will understand this one immediately.

Taeyeon (태연) – Dear Me (내게 들려주고 싶은 말)

Among the later Taeyeon songs, “Dear Me” feels the most personal. Added to Purpose for its 2020 reissue, it is a letter Taeyeon sings to herself. After all the blaming and grieving, this is where my playlist turns toward kindness: trust yourself, love yourself, keep going.

A Farewell to Heartbreak

If you are where I was — freshly broken-hearted and replaying everything — borrow this playlist for a while. These Taeyeon songs did not fix my heartbreak overnight, and nothing does. But they walked with me through every stage of it, and that was enough. Save this list of Taeyeon songs for the hard nights.

As you move through this journey, may you find strength in the lessons and the courage to let go of what no longer serves you. The right person is out there, ready to love you fully and honestly. Until then, keep moving forward with hope and an open heart.

Author’s Note

Reminiscing on my journey as a fan of Kim Taeyeon, I can see how her music has become part of my life. I became a fan during her time with Girls’ Generation, and I remain one now that she is a solo artist. Something about her talent and sincerity resonates deeply with me. Her music has woven itself into the fabric of my life.

Her music has been with me through so many moments. In happy times, it amplified my joy. In hard times, it comforted me and reminded me I was not alone. She sings of love, loss, grief, and everything in between — emotions we have all lived through — and that is why her songs feel like they were written for my own story.

The albums behind this list are My Voice, her first full-length album, Purpose, and INVU, along with the What Do I Call You EP. I also drew on EPs and singles — “To the Moon,” “Rain,” “Dear Me,” and many more. These Taeyeon songs became my guide through heartbreak and betrayal, and they showed me that healing really is possible.

So here is my message of hope for anyone going through heartbreak right now: you will heal. You will grow stronger, and you will learn to love yourself. On the other side of grief, you will see a more confident person looking back at you. Embrace the journey, cherish the memories, and know that brighter days are ahead.
