Spend Valentine’s Day in Intramuros with romantic walks, heritage sites, and kalesa rides—perfect for couples exploring Manila’s historic charm.

A place frozen in time, right in the middle of bustling Manila — that’s Intramuros! Built in the 1500s by Spanish colonizers, this walled city is filled with stories from the past and a charm you won’t find anywhere else.
For Valentine’s Day, my husband and I wanted to do something meaningful. Instead of the usual fancy dinner, we chose to spend the day walking through history together — and it turned out to be an unforgettable adventure.
Intramuros is famous for its rich colonial history. It played a huge role during the Spanish era in the Philippines, and that influence is still clear today in its churches, forts, and old stone roads. Since we both enjoy learning about the past, exploring Intramuros felt like the perfect date idea. We got to experience something new, share our thoughts, and enjoy the beauty of heritage and architecture all around us.
If you’re planning to visit Intramuros as a couple or simply curious about what to expect, this blog post will take you through our experience — from must-see spots and personal reflections to some tips along the way.
Fueling Up for Adventure: Our Breakfast at Figaro
No adventure is complete without a good breakfast, and we kicked off our Intramuros journey at Figaro, a proudly Filipino coffee chain that blends comfort food and great coffee in a cozy setting.
The moment we stepped inside, the smell of freshly brewed coffee greeted us. The place was warm and welcoming — perfect for an early morning meal. We ordered the Bacon and Mushroom Omelette, which came hot and hearty, paired with a creamy latte. It was the perfect fuel for a long walk ahead.
Whether you’re starting your day or taking a mid-tour break, Figaro is a solid stop for tasty comfort food and a caffeine boost.

A Walk Through History: Exploring Intramuros Landmarks
The ancient walls of Intramuros surround many historic buildings, each one sharing a piece of the past.
Intramuros Cathedral (Manila Cathedral): Towering over Intramuros, the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, more commonly known as Manila Cathedral, is a majestic landmark that shouldn’t be missed. Construction began in the 1500s, making it one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. The cathedral showcases a stunning Neo-Romanesque architectural style, featuring a grand facade and intricate details. Step inside and be captivated by the soaring ceilings, stained-glass windows, and beautiful artwork. Manila Cathedral has been a witness to many historical events and remains a significant place of worship for Filipinos today.
Let’s move on to our next stop—the remarkable San Agustin Church
San Agustin Church: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, San Agustin Church is a breathtaking testament to Spanish colonial architecture. Completed in the 1600s, it’s the oldest church in the Philippines and boasts a stunning Baroque facade. Step inside and marvel at the ornate interiors, intricate carvings, and priceless religious relics. Interestingly, San Agustin Church is one of the few structures in Intramuros that survived World War II relatively unscathed.
Casa Manila Museum: A Glimpse into Colonial Filipino Life
If you want to see what life was like during the Spanish colonial period, Casa Manila is a must-visit. This beautifully restored 19th-century home showcases traditional Filipino-Spanish architecture, antique furniture, and everyday objects from the past. Walking through its elegant rooms and peaceful courtyards, we could almost imagine what it was like to live there — from grand family dinners to simple daily routines. It gave us a vivid and personal look at Filipino history and culture.
A Walk Enriched by Stories
Our day in Intramuros was truly unforgettable. Every corner revealed something new — from striking architecture to hidden courtyards. What made the experience even more special was the unexpected learning we picked up along the way.
At one point, we overheard a tour guide speaking to a small group nearby. His storytelling was so engaging that we couldn’t help but pause and listen. He shared fascinating facts about the places around us — not just dates and names, but stories that brought the history to life. It added so much depth to what we were seeing. Moments like that reminded us how history isn’t just something you read about — it’s something you can feel, especially in a place like Intramuros.
Time to head to our next destination: Baluarte De San Diego
When my husband asked what “Baluarte” meant, I got curious too! A quick search online revealed that “Baluarte” is a Spanish word that translates to “bulwark” or “fortress.” In the case of Baluarte de San Diego, it refers to a historical defensive structure.
The heat outside was no match for our excitement! We made our way to Baluarte de San Diego right after we visited Casa Manila Museum, even though the sun was blazing. It turned out we weren’t the only ones looking for a dose of history on Valentine’s Day. To our surprise, there were quite a few other couples and families exploring the park.
Baluarte de San Diego: This historic structure, a spade-shaped fortification wasn’t just beautiful, it played a vital role in the city’s defense. Here’s a deeper look into this fascinating landmark:
History and Significance:
- Built in the late 1500s, Baluarte de San Diego is one of the oldest bastions (defensive structures) within Intramuros.
- It stood guard over Manila Bay, protecting the city from potential seaborne attacks.
- Unfortunately, the Baluarte was heavily damaged during World War II. However, thanks to restoration efforts completed in the 1990s, it has been given a new lease on life.
Exploring the Baluarte:
- Today, Baluarte de San Diego is a park named after Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero.
- Visitors can explore the park’s grounds and admire the restored structure.
- A monument to Rizal stands within the park, and a light and sound show depicting his martyrdom is sometimes presented.
Interesting Fact:
- The park offers a panoramic view of Manila Bay, allowing you to imagine the role the Baluarte played in safeguarding the city.
Our adventure continues with our next stop—The Fort Santiago
After all that walking, our feet were definitely feeling it! We decided to hop on a pedicab to get to Fort Santiago a little quicker. Thankfully, we found a friendly driver who was happy to take us there without overcharging. We chatted for a bit and agreed on a fair price.
The ride from Baluarte de San Diego to Fort Santiago is pretty short, only taking about 5 to 10 minutes. But it turned out to be a fun little adventure! We laughed and shared stories with our driver, who was a real character. He even jokingly called his pedicab the “Intramuros Lamborghini,” which totally added to the lighthearted mood of our day.
Fort Santiago: Located inside the walled city of Intramuros in Manila, is a historically significant site with plenty to see and explore.
Here are some of the attractions you can find there:
- Rizal Shrine: Dedicated to the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, the Rizal Shrine showcases artifacts and memorabilia related to his life and contributions to Philippine history.
- Historic Dungeons: Explore the dungeons of Fort Santiago, which served as prisons during the Spanish colonial period. These dungeons have witnessed significant events in Philippine history.
- Statuary Park: Visit Plaza Moriones, where you can appreciate the Gate of Fort Santiago and see the Plaza de Armas.
- Bateria de Santa Barbara: Discover the Bateria de Santa Barbara, a historical artillery battery that played a role in defending the fort.
- Museum: Inside Fort Santiago, there is a museum where you can learn more about the history and significance of the fort and its role in Philippine history.
Fort Santiago is not only a place of historical importance but also offers picturesque views and a peaceful ambiance.
Exploring Rizal’s Life and Legacy
Visiting the Rizal Museum inside Fort Santiago was one of the most moving parts of our Intramuros trip. It’s more than just a museum — it’s a place of deep reflection, honoring Dr. Jose Rizal, the national hero who helped ignite the flames of Philippine independence.
Walking Through Rizal’s Story
The museum guides you through Rizal’s life in a way that’s both informative and emotional. From his childhood to his final moments, each exhibit offers a closer look at his brilliance, resilience, and passion for reform. You don’t just read about Rizal — you feel the impact of his life and the tragedy of his untimely death.
What You’ll See Inside
- Historical Documents – Letters, articles, and writings that shed light on the colonial period and Rizal’s bold ideas.
- Personal Items – His clothes, furniture, and simple everyday belongings bring his humanity closer.
- Writings and Artwork – From his powerful novels to intricate sketches and sculptures, his genius shines in every piece.
A Personal Reflection
This visit hit me in a way I didn’t expect — maybe because I’m older now, with a deeper appreciation of what Rizal stood for. I remember visiting Wenceslao Vinzons’ house in Camarines Norte when I was fifteen, but I didn’t fully understand the weight of history back then. This time, walking through Rizal’s story, I felt a genuine sadness. He was so young when his life was taken — it’s impossible not to wonder how much more he could have done for our country.
As someone who enjoys Korean historical dramas, I started thinking — are there films that truly capture Rizal’s life? Thankfully, there are a few excellent ones:
- Jose Rizal: Ang Buhay ng Isang Bayani
- Rizal sa Dapitan
- Jose Rizal (the acclaimed 1998 film)
These films offer a powerful way to experience his story and reflect on the legacy he left behind.
Ending the Visit on a Warm Note
After our meaningful museum visit, we headed to a nearby cafeteria within Fort Santiago for a hearty Filipino lunch. It was the perfect way to pause, reflect, and savor not just the food — but the entire experience we shared that day.
Beyond the Landmarks: Immersing Yourself in the Charm of Intramuros

More Than Just History: The Charm of Intramuros
While the historical landmarks are the main attraction, Intramuros offers more than just a walk through the past. It has a unique charm that pulls you in — a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere that makes you forget you’re in the middle of busy Manila.
Cobblestone Streets and Kalesas
The moment you step inside the walled city, it feels like you’re walking onto a movie set. The cobblestone streets, carefully laid down centuries ago, give Intramuros its nostalgic beauty. And then there are the horse-drawn carriages — or kalesas — slowly making their way through the roads. Riding one is like time-traveling to the Spanish era. It’s also a romantic way to see the sights, especially for couples looking to make memories.
Peaceful Courtyards and Hidden Gems
Intramuros is full of surprises. As you wander through narrow alleys, you’ll find hidden courtyards that offer quiet breaks from the noise of the city. There are also small museums and art galleries tucked away in corners, where you can see Filipino art, old photographs, and historical artifacts that tell the story of the country in more intimate ways.
A Taste of Filipino Culture
Intramuros isn’t just about looking back at history — it’s a living, breathing place where Filipino culture thrives. Along the streets, local vendors sell delicious Filipino snacks like barbecue skewers, turon, and halo-halo. These tasty treats make the walk even more enjoyable. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a cultural performance or see locals dressed in traditional Filipino attire, adding vibrant color to the old stone streets.
Turning Pages of the Past into New Love Stories
As we wandered through Intramuros, we were amazed by how much of the Spanish influence is still visible in the Philippines. Every cobblestone street and preserved building felt like stepping into a different era. It was like walking through a living museum.
Exploring historical sites is such a wonderful experience—but it’s not always easy. The heat was intense that day. We were sweaty, hungry, and tired (trust us, we really felt it!). Still, even with the scorching weather and all the walking, discovering these hidden gems made everything worth it.
That’s how we spent our Valentine’s Day—exploring Intramuros hand-in-hand. We were a little worn out by the end, but the fun we had made it one of our most memorable days together.
Since my husband’s time in the Philippines is limited, we try to make every moment count. Exploring places like Intramuros is something we both enjoy. Even after a full day, we still wished we had more time inside those historic walls.
We were especially grateful for the experience—sharing meaningful conversations, observing the people and surroundings, and learning more about history, each other, and life with every step. Choosing to do a DIY tour was the best decision for us. It gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace. We love reading, so stopping whenever something caught our interest was perfect.
Surprisingly, my husband remembers more about Philippine history than I do! Anytime we got curious, Wikipedia was just a click away. Intramuros is truly a dream for history lovers—or anyone who enjoys a glimpse of the past.
Also, shoutout to the Klook app! It helped us skip long lines and save time, so we could focus on enjoying the adventure.
Thanks for reading! We hope this inspires you to discover the magic of Intramuros for yourself.
Here’s to more joyful journeys ahead! 🌸
